This weeks Shine A Light Sunday I want to introduce you to Manchester's Cold Water Swimmers (Chris Bridgett vocals/guitar, Carrie Lawson bass and Selina Woolnough drums), a rock n rock band who got together in their drummer’s conservatory in Prestwich, on the day mark E Smith died.
Cold Water Swimmers have already cemented their position as one of the most exciting new bands in Manchester’s thriving underground music scene. They released three singles in 2019 with a double a side 'Summer Breeze/I'll Be Your Witness' (my favourite), Burn Your Idols and Robots.
CWS are a fucking great rock and roll band, whom I've been blessed enough to see twice now. The first time I saw them playing was at YANA Festival in March last year, definitely one of the highlights of the day for me. Second time being March 1st, at the start of a month where I managed to get 3 gigs in before gig before lockdown put a stop to the live music scene. I've included Burn Your Idols from that gig, in case you're missing live music as much as I am.
'Be My Sunshine' the first release from the band of 2020, has now been released to stream on the bands own label DIY or DIE on June 22nd // recorded by Simon Archer at 6DB Salford.
"It’s a 3 minute pop song, a dark one but a pop song none the less” said Chris Bridgett, speaking about the track before its release.
"Imagine The La’s, jumping in a van with The Coral hitting the M62 only stopping at Birch Services, to pick up The Stooges (who’ve gone acoustic) and The Velvet Underground. Then heading to Manchester to jam Buzzcocks tunes on the hottest day of the year, in a country rock n roll style outside Central Library and you’ll get the vibe"!
'Be My Sunshine' is definitely juxtaposed to the bands usual material; but in times of obscurity we all need glimmers of light, and this song is precisely that.
